A question from  the Lord came to me right away while reading Jeremiah 34:14b-16:
“Lord, have I made a covenant, a promise, or a commitment to You that I have turned my back on?”

This question reminded me of Psalm 139:23-25 “Search me and try me, see if there is any wicked way in me.” (my paraphrase)

I had to pause and sit with this question because God takes these vows and agreements seriously. There are specific commandments and expectations laid out in scripture (Titus 1:1-9), but what He longs for is our obedience in response to His love for each of us. Obedience is a key theme throughout the whole of Scripture. Why? Because it is an active way we can demonstrate our love to Him, and walk hand in hand with Him, with nothing getting in the way of us hearing Him or being heard by Him. As believers, Romans reminds us that nothing can separate us from the love of God, but I want clear communication between me and Him. I don’t want to have forgotten a vow I made to Him and then lost sight of it along the way. As I type these thoughts out, I am still pondering the question to Him. Have I forgotten something? I am not experiencing a change in our conversation. I am still pursuing Him and talking with Him throughout the day, but I am serious about my obedience and expressions of love towards God. I think it’s good and healthy to ask this question regularly. I want God to know that I love Him.

The other day, as I was working in my office, I heard Bruce working in another part of the house near me. I just thought about how much I love that man of mine. I called out to him, “Babe! I love you!”

He stopped and chuckled, saying, “Okay,” with a tone indicating how random that thought and declaration were in the middle of our work. He appreciated it, but it was random.

Don’t you think the Lord of Lords, King of kings, Almighty God wants to hear how much each of us loves him?

So go ahead and ponder His love and your expressions of obedience. Ask Him if there is a promise or vow you have forgotten. Remember His mercy and forgiveness; don’t let shame trap you. Confess any sin and move on with Him.
